Debra Joann Hughes, 72, of Hamlet, Indiana, passed away on Saturday, May 18th, 2024, surrounded by family and friends.
Born Debra Joann Shreves on May 17th, 1952, to a large family, Deb was one of nine children. She attended South Central High School, graduating in 1970. After graduation she lived a quiet and compassionate life with her husband, Joe Edward Hughes. Together they raised their most beloved children, Sherry Lynn (Jim) Keiss of Manchester, TN, Jeremy (Sarah) Hughes of LaPorte, IN, Scott Brown of Caryville, TN, Stephanie (Drake) Thorpe of Knox, IN, Carter Brown of Columbus, GA, and Faith Ann Brown of Hamlet, IN. She leaves behind many loving family members of sisters, in-laws, nieces, nephews, kids, grandkids, great grandkids, cousins, friends, and more.
Deb married her high school sweetheart on July 3rd, 1971. She dedicated her life to loving and nurturing her many children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She loved spending time with them, watching them grow and change. Her face lit up with every hug, burst of laughter, and heartfelt "I love you" from each and every one of them.
Deb's interests included bowling, softball, and camping, but especially any sport or interest of the family members. She'd sit patiently for hours to cheer on one of her grandkids or great-grandkids. While her interests varied, her greatest quality was her compassion. Her table was always open and welcoming to anyone who visited, or anyone in need. She welcomed all with open arms. Deb was witty, funny, kind, caring, and a fighter until the end. She will be greatly missed.
Deb was preceded in death by her parents, James Bernard and Alice Shreves; her brother, James (Butch) Shreves; brother-in-law, Terry Hughes; father-in-law, JC Hughes; sister-in-law, Maryann Shreves; close family friend, Sharon Boswell; and her son, Jeffery Scott Hughes.
