Edna Marie Shehorn, died July 1, 2003 at Settlers House in LaPorte following a long illness.
She was born January 8, 1909 in O'Fallon, IL, a daughter of the late Rev. H.C. Brown and Bessie Cates Brown. On April 22, 1939 in Alton, IL, she married Roy R. Shehorn, Sr., who died September 23, 1977.
She attended the University of Colorado at Boulder, Rockford College, and graduated with a B.A. degree from Cornell College, Mt. Vernon, IA. She also did graduate work at Indiana State Teachers College, Ball State, Valparaiso, Purdue and Indiana University.
Edna Marie was a member of the First United Methodist Church of LaPorte, a member of the Martha Circle, the Chancel Choir, and served as an officer of the United Methodist Women at the local and district level. She also taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. In addition to her service to the Methodist Church, she also was a past member of the LaPorte County Extension Homemakers Choralaires, American Association of University Women, Indiana State Teacher's Association and the Indiana Teacher's Retirement Association.
She started her teaching career in Lawrenceville, IL, in 1929, in a one-room schoolhouse. She also taught Social Studies for 6 years in Lake Forest, IL. In 1948, Mrs Shehorn started her LaPorte Community Schools teaching career at Washington School teaching kindergarten. She will long be remembered for her 27 years of service as a kindergarten teacher at Handley School. In 1973, Edna Marie was chosen as an Outstanding Elementary Teacher of America. She retired from teaching in 1975 and was a member of the Indiana State Teacher's Association and the Indiana Teacher's Retirement Association.
Surviving is a daughter, Mary Linda Williams (John) of Allegany, NY, a son, Roy R. Shehorn, Jr. of LaPorte, one granddaughter, Jennifer W. Johnson (Dan) of Drewryville, VA and two great-grandchildren, Lee W. Johnson and Maryann A. Johnson also of VA, several nieces and nephews and a sister-in-law, Lorraine Brown of Ellenton, FL.
In addition to her husband and parents, two brothers, Rev. Clifford C. Brown and Kenneth P. Brown, predeceased her.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Cutler Funeral Home of LaPorte, IN. Friends will be received on Monday, July 14, 2003 at First United Methodist Church from 9 to 11 a.m. Funeral services will be held at the church at 11:00. Burial will be in Patton Cemetery in LaPorte.
