Jean W. Lawson, born December 16, 1950, reached the end of her life’s journey on Monday, May 9, 2022, with the same unwavering spirit and strength that touched so many lives during her 71 years. She passed away surrounded by family at her home in LaPorte, Indiana, one in which she filled with so many loving memories as a wife, mom, grandma, aunt, and friend.
If there is no greater calling than to serve others, then fewer lives have been more well-lived. You won’t find her name in newspaper clippings or fixed upon the edifice of a building, but indelibly etched forever on the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to cross her path.
Above all, Jean found joy in the joy of others. A mother of three boys, she came along with them on fishing trips and immersed herself in March Madness, often picking a much stronger bracket than any of them, mind you. The love for her boys may have only been surpassed by the love for her grandchildren. The blankets she so enjoyed knitting and crocheting would often find their way to people undergoing cancer treatment or others in need. The Christmas ornaments and decorations she made, over the years for family, brightened the holidays in a way only she could.
Those who were close to her would tell you that she knew precisely when you needed a push and when you needed a hug. She was quick to shoulder the burdens for others but never wanted to burden anyone with her own. She had an empathetic ear, kind heart, and quick wit. She loved her students at Kingsbury Elementary like they were her own children and the people at LaPorte County Parks like her own family.
Her parting words were, "I love you". Perhaps nothing could better describe this sweet women’s legacy. While her absence will be felt by all who loved her, there is peace in knowing that she now returns to her true love, the late Jim Lawson, who married her 50 years ago this coming May 27.
Jean is survived by sons, Brian (Judy Newman-Bale) Lawson of Traverse City, Michigan, Mickey (Kristi) Lawson of Lake Barrington, Illinois, and Dan (Megan) Lawson of Noblesville, Indiana; 9 grandchildren Eva, Avery, Holly, Emmett, Claire, Connor and Colin Lawson and Emma and Sophie Newman-Bale; and sister Janet Weber of Boulder, Colorado.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harvey and Polly (Bryan) Weber.
