Lawrence "Larry" J. Warg, Jr.

October 31, 1953 — January 4, 2022

Lawrence "Larry" J. Warg, 68, passed away unexpectedly on January 4, 2022, at Northwest Health in La Porte.

He was born on Halloween in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, the second of five siblings. He left home in 1971 to pursue a degree in social work from Valparaiso University, and liked to speculate that the movie “Animal House” was based on his time there. His rough and rowdy ways were tamed, however, upon meeting both Ramona Stewart and Jesus Christ in 1974. He later became a member of Grace Baptist Church, where he enjoyed playing the drums for their worship band… so perhaps a little bit of “rowdy” stuck around after all.

Larry & Ramona were married on August 2, 1975, and had two brilliant children (who may or may not have written this obituary): Lara and Joshua. However, all he would tell you about in person was his promotion to “Papa,” caused by his five adoring grandchildren: Chloe, Dexter, Lily, Norah, and Benjamin. Upon retiring from his 40-year career with the Indiana Department of Correction, he enjoyed spending time with family and friends, traveling, and napping.

At 6’6” tall, Larry had a commanding and sometimes intimidating presence, but he would quickly reveal himself to be a friendly “talker” with unquenchable curiosity. He was an avid reader, and especially enjoyed deepening his understanding of history through the biographies of US Presidents. His love of reading was passed along to his children and grandchildren: a gift that requires no wi-fi, only a comfortable chair, good light, and hours to spare. He was a militant recycler, wealth of trivia, and extremely adept at logic puzzles.

In the end, Larry loved the Lord and his family with all his heart and was a man who lived firmly by his principles. He was a genuinely good and decent person and we were blessed to have known him. Many years ago, when asked which books were most influential in shaping his life, Larry answered the Bible and the Boy Scout Handbook. He would therefore be most honored to have any memorial contributions directed to Grace Baptist Church, 2502 Monroe St., La Porte, IN 46350 or the Boy Scouts of America, www.scouting.org.

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 12 p.m. on Saturday, January 8, 2022, at Grace Baptist Church, La Porte.
