Mary Ellen Wedow

May 10, 1951 — May 3, 2025

Mary Ellen (Mecca) Wedow passed away on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at the age of 73, surrounded by her husband and daughters. She was born on May 10, 1951, in Michigan City, Indiana, to parents Mary and Joseph Mecca. She enjoyed 50 wonderful years of marriage to her devoted husband, Edward Albert Wedow, Jr. They spent most of their life together residing in La Porte, where they raised five amazing daughters. They spent a generation dedicated to St. Joseph's Parish and the La Porte Marching Band. More recently, she observed her faith at Sacred Heart Church in La Porte.

Mary Ellen is preceded in death by her parents, Mary and Joseph; as well as her brothers, Daniel Mecca and John Topa; her sister, Paulette Smiertelny; and brother-in-law, Thomas Marciniak. Additionally, Geraldine and Edward Albert Wedow, Sr. await her in heaven.

Mary Ellen and Ed were married on August 10, 1974, in Michigan City, and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last fall. For 50 years, the two have been inseparable. Mary Ellen was the quintessential mother and grandmother to her 5 daughters and 14 grandchildren: Julia (Brian Gray), Mary Beth (Doug Fedorchak), Christina (Robert Snyder), Amanda (Michael Tyburski), and Jessica (Cooper Bauer); and Hailey and Aliyah Dawson, Ayden and Lillian Gray, Brandon, Lauren, Addison, and Austin Fedorchak, Daniel and Sophia Snyder, Drake and Erik Tyburski, and Coraline Bauer and her future sister.

She is also survived by her sisters and dearest friends, Gerry Marciniak and Norma (John) Ransom, and her sister-in-law, Christine Mecca.

Her most cherished hobbies included celebrating her Polish heritage and Catholic faith in addition to the outdoors where she gardened continuously. She was highly regarded as a master seamstress and avid quilter. Mary Ellen was known for her open home and limitless generosity, and she was widely regarded as a mother-to-all. She listened, commiserated, and offered support, always placing the needs of others above her own.
