Shirley Vallejo Zeitz

July 4, 1921 — April 11, 2003

Shirley Vallejo Zeitz, 81, St. Louis, formerly of LaPorte, died April 11, 2003, in St. Louis.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Oak Grove Cemetery in Mill Creek, with the Rev. Doug Ohime officiating.

Mrs. Zeitz was born July 4, 1921, in Mexico City, Mexico, to Louis Guermillo Vallejo Sr., and Della Darlene Thayer Vallejo Stombaugh. She was married for 61 years to Robert Lee Zeitz, who preceded her in death.

Survivors include three daughters, Sylvia Darlene Francis, Orlando, Fla., Linda Lee Douglass, St. Louis, and Rebecca Lynn Mathis, Houston, Texas; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Doris Anita Vallejo Bandistel, Fish Lake; and one brother, Louis Guermillo Vallejo Jr., Mexico City.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Phyllis May Stombaugh Marshall and Dolores Eileen Vallejo.

She had attended LaPorte High School and was a member of LaPorte First Baptist Church.

Mrs. Zeitz was a fine artist renowned for her sculpted portrait busts. Her art career spanned more than seven decades and her commissions ranged from her signature portrait busts to landscapes and portraits painted in oil and acrylic. She received her first commission for a painting at the age of 13 and continued to work until a few months before her death. Her work is currently displayed in private homes throughout the United States.
