Suki Cho passed away on April 19, 2025, at the age of 82 in Baraga, Michigan.
Born in Yonan, North Korea, she escaped to South Korea with her Christian family in 1951. Separated from her parents and older brother shortly after escaping, she spent the Korean War orphaned on Gyodong Island, where, at eight years old, she lived with her four-year-old brother until her family was finally reunited three years later.
Suki received her education in South Korea and worked at the U.S. Air Force Base Library in Osan until immigrating to the United States in 1976, earning her American citizenship in 1980. She was employed at the La Porte County Public Library for 23 years and was a member of the Speakers Bureau. Suki also served as a Korean Language Interpreter for the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles. She was a Board Member of the La Porte County Symphony Orchestra and was granted lifetime Board Membership in the La Porte County Salvation Army. Additionally, she was a member of the La Porte Presbyterian Church.
In 2024, she moved to Baraga to live with her daughter and son-in-law. Her beloved Saint Bernard/Mastiff mix, Archie, was a constant companion throughout her time in Michigan, staying by her side until she passed.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Chilson. Survivors include daughter, Michelle (Bryan) Krallman of Baraga; son, Joshua (Tobi) Mattingly of Chicago; nephews, Gyuhwan (Canada) and Junghwan (Germany); and niece, Jieun (South Korea).
Suki's only regret was never reconnecting with an American soldier she met during the war, who wanted to adopt her and her brother and often checked in on their well-being when they decided to stay on the island in hopes of reuniting with the rest of their family. She wished for him to know that she was okay, that she was safe, had moved to America, raised a family, and lived a wonderful life.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the La Porte Salvation Army, 3240 Monroe St, La Porte, IN 46350 or UNICEF USA, 125 Maiden Lane, New York, NY 10038.
