William "Bill" Edward Hedge

William "Bill" Edward Hedge, 76, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away on Monday, February 19, 2024 in La Porte.

Bill was born in La Porte, IN, on October 14, 1947 to John and Edith (Badkey) Hedge.

On September 18, 1976 in Michigan City, IN, he married Mary Gelhaus, who survives. Also surviving is his sister, Cynthia Ann Hedge.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Philip Lee Hedge; and infant sister, Suzanne Hedge.

After graduating from La Porte High School in 1966, Bill attended Indiana University, where he obtained his bachelors degree.  He then went on to graduate in 1973 from the Indiana University School of Law, where he obtained his doctorate.

Bill was an attorney for 50 years.  He was a lifetime member of the Indiana University Alumni Association.  Bill was a member of the American, Indiana, and La Porte County Bar Associations and the Probate, Trust and Real Property Sections of the Indiana Bar Association.  He was a board member for the Bethany Lutheran Church Foundation and Stepping Stone Shelter.  While a member of the La Porte Rotary Club, Bill was named a Paul Harris Fellow.  Bill was also a member of the Salvation Army Community Advisory Board, County Parks Foundation Board, and Bethany Lutheran Church.  Previously, Bill was a member of the Antique Auto Club of Michiana, Cadillac and LaSalle Club, Rolls Royce Owners Club, and the La Porte Jaycees.

He believed in the importance of investing in the youth of La Porte.  Bill was a Youth Sponsor for Bethany Lutheran Church of La Porte and St. John's United Church of Christ in Michigan City.  He was a board member for the La Porte Area Juvenile Aid Association and a past Deputy Prosecuting Attorney for the Juvenile Court.

Bill enjoyed golfing, attending car shows, and sailing on Lake Michigan.

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.

A Private Family Celebration of Life Memorial Service has been held.
